What is Responsive Design?

Quick answer

A web design approach that makes pages automatically adapt their layout to fit any screen size, from phones to large monitors.

Responsive Design, explained

Responsive web design, a term coined by designer Ethan Marcotte in 2010, uses flexible layouts, scalable images, and CSS media queries so a single website works well on every device. On a wide screen, content might sit in three columns; on a phone, the same content stacks into one column with larger buttons.

Because most web traffic now comes from mobile devices, responsive design is a basic expectation. Google indexes the mobile version of sites first, so a poor mobile experience can also affect search visibility. For example, a restaurant's website should let a visitor on a phone read the menu, tap to call, and get directions without zooming or scrolling sideways. Testing on real devices is important, since layouts that look fine in a desktop browser can break on small screens.
