What is Core Web Vitals?

Quick answer

A set of Google metrics that measure real-world page experience: loading speed, responsiveness to input, and visual stability.

Core Web Vitals, explained

Google introduced Core Web Vitals in 2020 to measure how a page feels to users. There are three metrics. Largest Contentful Paint measures how quickly the main content loads. Interaction to Next Paint, which replaced First Input Delay in March 2024, measures how quickly a page responds to clicks, taps, and key presses. Cumulative Layout Shift measures how much content unexpectedly jumps around while loading.

Google uses these metrics as one of many signals in search ranking. For example, an online store whose product images load slowly and whose buttons shift as ads appear would score poorly and frustrate shoppers. Common improvements include compressing images, reserving space for ads and media, reducing heavy JavaScript, and using a content delivery network. Data from tools such as PageSpeed Insights helps identify problems.
