What is Orchestration?

Quick answer

Automated coordination and management of multiple systems, services, or tasks so they work together as a complete workflow.

Orchestration, explained

Orchestration means automating how many parts fit together, rather than automating single tasks in isolation. In cloud computing, container orchestration tools such as Kubernetes decide where containers run, connect them on networks, scale them, and replace failed ones.

The term is also used in data engineering, where workflow orchestrators like Apache Airflow schedule and monitor pipelines with many dependent steps, such as extracting data, transforming it, and refreshing dashboards in the right order. In AI, orchestration frameworks coordinate calls between language models, databases, and tools for agents and retrieval systems. Orchestration is often contrasted with choreography, where services react to events independently without a central coordinator.
