Inventory Management System, explained
An inventory management system records every item coming in from suppliers and going out through sales, returns, or waste. It can update stock in real time when connected to a point of sale or online store, alert staff when items fall below a reorder point, generate purchase orders, and report on which products sell fastest or sit unsold.
For example, a hardware store selling both in-store and online can avoid selling the same last item twice because both channels draw from one stock count. Restaurants use inventory tools to track ingredients and reduce food waste. Common features include barcode scanning, multi-location tracking, supplier management, and integration with accounting software. Accuracy depends on staff recording deliveries, transfers, and damaged goods consistently, plus regular physical stock counts.
