What is Answer Engine Optimization?

Quick answer

Structuring content so search engines, voice assistants, and AI tools can pull it out as a direct answer to a user's question.

Answer Engine Optimization, explained

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, recognizes that many searches now end with an answer shown directly on the results page, read aloud by a voice assistant, or summarized by an AI system. Instead of only aiming for a high ranking, AEO aims for content to be selected and quoted as the answer.

Common practices include putting a clear, concise answer near the top of a page, using question-style headings, adding FAQ sections, writing in plain language, and using schema markup to describe content. For example, a page titled What is a kitchen display system might open with a two-sentence definition, then expand with details and examples. AEO overlaps heavily with good SEO. A practical concern is that some answers are read without a click, so businesses should track visibility as well as visits.
