What is Yield?

Quick answer

In computing, voluntarily giving up the CPU so other tasks can run; in chipmaking, the share of working chips produced on a wafer.

Yield, explained

In operating systems and programming, a thread or process yields when it voluntarily gives up its remaining time on the CPU, allowing the scheduler to run other tasks. Cooperative multitasking depends on tasks yielding regularly. In languages such as Python and JavaScript, the yield keyword pauses a generator function and returns a value, resuming later from the same point, which is useful for processing large data streams step by step.

In semiconductor manufacturing, yield refers to the percentage of chips on a silicon wafer that work correctly. Higher yields lower the cost per chip, and new manufacturing processes typically start with lower yields that improve as factories refine production. In finance, yield means the return earned on an investment.
