What is Wallet?

Quick answer

Software or hardware that stores the private keys needed to access and manage cryptocurrency and other blockchain assets.

Wallet, explained

A crypto wallet does not actually hold coins; the assets live on the blockchain. Instead, the wallet stores private keys, which prove ownership and authorize transactions, and shows balances by reading the blockchain.

Hot wallets are connected to the internet, such as mobile apps and browser extensions, making them convenient for frequent use but more exposed to hacking. Cold wallets, such as hardware devices kept offline, offer stronger protection for long-term holdings. Custodial wallets are managed by an exchange, which controls the keys, while non-custodial wallets give users full control and full responsibility. Most wallets provide a recovery phrase of 12 or 24 words; anyone who obtains it can take the funds, so it must never be shared.
