What is Security Information and Event Management?

Quick answer

A security system, known as SIEM, that collects and analyzes log data from across an organization to detect threats and support investigations.

Security Information and Event Management, explained

A SIEM gathers logs and events from servers, firewalls, cloud services, applications, identity systems, and endpoint tools in one place. It normalizes the data, applies detection rules and analytics, and raises alerts when it spots suspicious patterns. It also stores records for investigations and compliance audits.

For example, a SIEM might link several failed logins from an unusual country, a successful login shortly afterwards, and a large file download, then alert the security team to a likely account takeover. Security operations centers rely heavily on SIEM platforms. They can be expensive, both in licence costs, which often depend on data volume, and in the effort needed to tune rules and reduce false alarms. Many organizations pair SIEM with automation tools to handle routine responses.
