What is Embedded Finance?

Quick answer

Financial services such as payments, accounts, cards, lending, or insurance built directly into non-financial apps and platforms.

Embedded Finance, explained

Embedded finance lets software companies offer financial features inside their own products instead of sending customers to a bank. They usually partner with licensed banks and infrastructure providers, often through banking-as-a-service platforms, rather than becoming banks themselves.

Examples include ride-hailing apps that pay drivers instantly, accounting software that offers business debit cards, marketplaces that lend working capital to sellers based on their sales history, and checkout pages that offer buy now, pay later. For instance, a salon booking platform might let salons accept card payments, receive next-day payouts, and apply for small loans without leaving the app. Embedded finance can create new revenue and convenience, but compliance responsibilities are shared with partners, and fraud, reconciliation, and credit risk must be managed carefully.
